Green moss cedar forests with cedar elderberry
These cedar forests are confined to relatively well-moistened positions on the slopes of a straight or slightly curved profile, with a fairly thick layer of sandy loam, mica, stony eluvium, or bouldery light loam. The following associations belonging to this group are distinguished.
Cowberry-green mossy cedar wood with cedar elderberry. In Sosnovka Bay, this association is common on the northwestern steep slopes of the surrounding spurs facing Lake Baikal in the upper part of the belt, which is subject to temperature inversion. It occupies a strip between rare-leaved larches with cedar elderberry at the bottom and cowberry-green cedar forests without a tier of cedar elderberry at the top of the same slope. Within this strip, as you move up the slope, the stand thickens and improves in growth, a single pine tree appears in it, and the tier of cedar wood, which is almost continuous at the bottom, is gradually thinned out. Higher up the slope, beyond the inversion zone, at an altitude of more than 150 m, in the same positions in the relief, cowberry-cowberry forests and mixed coniferous-dark coniferous forests of the III—IV range are developed without a tier of cedar elderberry or only with rare stunted specimens. Below is a description of the sites of this association in its two high—altitude variants, the lower one — rare-coniferous and the upper one - well-closed cedar forest with a dense tier of cedar elderberry.
Rare-leaved cowberry-green cedar with cedar elderberry. Uch. 22, 2IIX 1965. The indigenous north-western slope to Sosnovka Bay, at an altitude of about 100 m above Lake Baikal. The smoothed edge of the slope between the Snow key fall and the dry hollow adjacent to the north. Flat north-western slope with a steepness of 18-20°
A stand of the fifth bonita, oppressed, stunted. Composition 8K2L-, bonitet IV—V. Still, although weaker, the trees are affected by the influence of temperature inversion. The crowns begin at the bottom 1/4 or 1/3 of the trunk, and the dry branches descend to the base. Cedar undergrowth is solitary, but well-growing, 8-10 m high. Larch grows slightly better here, its height is up to 22 m, the predominant diameter is about 30 cm. The crowns are attached to the upper quarter of the trunk. Stunted larches, which reach a height of about 12 m, are located in small gaps. The pine is very depressed, 15-10 m high. There is no undergrowth of larch and pine. The height of the birch is about 15 m. Occasionally there are good young birch trees with a height of 8 m. There are decayed birch decks. The stand undoubtedly grew after a very long-ago fire and initially had a more mixed composition.
The undergrowth consists of ageless, lush, loose Pinus pumila bushes. Closeness 0.8, height 3 m. Alnus fruticosa bushes with a height of 5 m and oppressed specimens of Rosa acicularis with a height of 35 cm are rarely found. The shrub cover consists of only lingonberry Vaccinium vitis-idaea — cor.2, covering 0.6—0.7 of the surface. The moss carpet is almost continuous, covering 0.9, consists of Pleurozium schreberi — soc.— cor.3 and Hylocomium splendens — sol. gr. Mushrooms are rarely found: butterflyfish, raincoats, etc.
Above this area, along the same slope, forest growth is noticeably improving. Outside the inversion band, cowberry-cowberry of the IVth class is described with an admixture of larch, pine and birch, with rare and depressed cedar elderberry, which does not form a tier. Thus, the cedar forests on the root slopes form a high-altitude range from rare with a dense tier of cedar elderberry to a well-closed forest with an admixture of light coniferous species, with rare and stunted cedar elderberry or without it. For this number of associations, participation in the stand of fir is not typical, and its undergrowth is usually absent or isolated here.
Cedarwood osochkovo-lingonberry-green moss with cedar elderberry. The association occupies more favorable locations with close to optimal humidification. We observed it in Sosnovka Bay in the transition zone between the optimal belt and the lower part of the forest belt, which is subject to temperature inversion, at a distance from Lake Baikal, at an altitude of more than 100 m above its level. South of Shumilikha, where cedar forests descend down the mountain slopes directly to Lake Baikal, the same cedar forests are found in small areas on the trails at the foot of the root slopes of the lower part of the forest belt. This association is close to the mixed pine-deciduous-cedar forests with cedar elderberry described in the transition zone. A brief description of the sites of this association is given below.
Uch. 55, 15/IX, 1961 The periphery of Sosnovka Bay is on the border between the root slope of the Snow Key fall and the upper part of the cone of the Shumilikha outflow. The height above Lake Baikal is more than 100 m. The slope of the northern points facing Sosnovka Bay is steeply 8-12°, composed of bouldery loam.
The stand is ripe, IV bonita. The closeness of the crowns is 0.7—0.8. The composition of the dominant canopy is 7KZP+B; the second younger one is YUP+K+B. The height of the cedar and fir of the dominant canopy is 22-23 m, the birch is mostly in the subordinate canopy, the height is 17-20 m.
